Significance of Potato Crop

 Significance of Potato Crop

Potato is India’s fourth growing consumable and commercial crop where wheat, rice and

corn are grown as the first preference. Because the potato consumes less water and uses

less land than any other significant food crop, cultivation is highly sustainable. As a result,

the potatoes significance is growing on a global scale that can only be compared to rice,

wheat, and maize in terms of its contribution to securing food and nutrition . From the 17th

century in India, the potato has been started to cultivated and it is going to add minerals,

vitamin B and vitamin C to the diet . The fungal and viral have an affinity towards

infecting the potato. As per the author  suggestions, there are more than 30 viruses to

infect the potato. The less frequently a virus interacts with the host's foliar and tuber sections,

and less the virus spreads from previously cultivated plants and seasonal changes, the less

likely to cause an infection. But the infection goes high when they regularly come in touch

with the host which will directly affect the rate of growth of the tuber .

Plant diseases are a significant factor in agriculture's halting growth . Traditionally,

a visual assessment of disease severity is based on the features of plant disease symptoms and

visible indicators of pathogens for the identification and calculation of disease severity. The

severity of a disease is assessed by a trained laboratory professional/scientists and subjected

to extensive inquiry and research . This method may need a considerable amount of time

and an expert of plant pathology in disease diagnosis.

A comprehensive approach is needed to prevent and control plant diseases in order to

avoid significant yield loss. So, in order to get an accurate and timely evaluation of the

numerous plant diseases, rapid and appropriate approaches must be used. Disease control

procedures may be a waste of time and resources and may result in additional plant losses

without accurate identification of the disease and the disease-causing agent. Often, plant

pathologists must rely on visual symptoms for the identification of the disease. Thus, in order

to manage the diseases in plant health monitoring early detection of plant pathogens is more

important. Advanced computer vision technologies like machine learning, and deep learning

play a very important role in the early, rapid detection and diagnosis of plant disease.
