IDENTIFICATION TEST FOR OIL AND FATS
Chemical test for Castor oil
Preliminary observation:
Colour: Pale yellowish (or ) almost colourless, transparent viscous liquid
Odour- Slight and characteristic
Taste- Bland, acrid, and nauseating
Solubility- Soluble in alcohol, miscible with chloroform, solvent ether, glacial acetic acid and petroleum ether(40 ο -60ο)

Add 5ml of light petroleum ether
(40 ο -60ο) to 10ml of castor oil
A clear solution results and on increasing the petroleum ether about 15ml, turbid mixture will be obtained
Castor oil present

Oil + equal volume of alcohol and cool to 0οC for 3hrs
A clear liquid is obtained
Castor oil is present.


Report:

Chemical test for shark- liver oil
Preliminary observations:
Colour: Pale yellow to brownish yellow oil
Odour: Characteristic fishy but not acrid
Taste: Bland or fishy
Solubility: Miscible with solvent ether, chloroform and with light petroleum (60 ο -80ο), slightly 
                  soluble in alcohol.

Dissolve 05 drops in 1ml of chloroform in a dry test tube and add 5 drop of concentarted sulphuric acid and shake well.
A pale violet colour is produced changing to purple brown or blue(due to Vit. A)

1ml oil + 10ml chloroform in dry test tube  +saturated solution of antimony tri chloride in chloroform solution

Blue colour
Shark liver oil present


3.
5ml of shark liver oil + 5ml of benzene, centrifuge at 25οC for 25mins
Clear solution with no precipitate
Shark liver oil present
