Fluoride........... Absorption of Fluoride:
Absorption of Fluoride:
Most fluorides are absorbed
rapidly and transported in the body and subsequently excreted as the fluoride
is absorbed. The main factors influencing absorption are species variation,
concentration of fluorides ingested, solubility and degree of ionization of the
compounds, and other dietary constituents such as calcium, which may from
insoluble sales with fluoride. The rate of absorption increases with starvation and presence of
fats. The presence of calcium magnesium
and aluminum decrease absorption. A comparison of rates of absorption of
fluoride in milk and water indicates a
significant reduction in fluoride absorption from milk during the first hour,
but thereafter absorption continued at higher levels for longer periods of
time.
Effects of fluoride:
Excess consumption of fluoride
leeds to certain health problems like Dental
fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis.
Excessive ingestion of fluoride during the early childhood
years may damage the tooth forming cells, leading to a defect in the enamel
known as dental fluorosis
Excessive exposure to fluoride causes an arthrtiic bone
disease called skeletal fluorosis
