PRINCIPLE:
Tooth powder is the simplest & cheapest form of dentifrices compare to toothpaste. Tooth powder has less solubility problem in formulation because interaction between components is less in absence of water. Oxidizing agent & fluorides retain their effective concentration longer in tooth powder than in toothpaste. It contains abrasive such as precipitated chalk i.e.: calcium carbonate. It is used in small proportion and mixed with larger quantities of other abrasive It contain dry calcium phosphate which usually provides the toothpaste the pH ranging from 6--8. It also contain detergent like sodium lauryl sulphate which is necessary to reduce interfacial tension between adherent matter & surface of teeth thereby during cleaning, it help in penetration & removed matter in the foam produced. It also contains sodium per borate that acts as bleaching agent, which is added to improve the whitening action of tooth powder. They are basically oxidizing agents. Artificial sweeteners such as sodium Saccharin is used to an extent of 0.05-0.25%. Flavour such as peppermint oil is used which improves the characteristic taste & sensation of freshness in mouth.
PROCEDURE:
1. All
solid ingredients are requiring being in fine powder.
2. Mix
the weighed quantity of sodium Saccharine and peppermint oil together with
small amount of precipitated chalk in mortar until uniform mix is obtained.
3. In
another clean mortar mix sodiumlauryl sulphate with sodium per borate lightly
by
trituration
trituration
4. Add
Flavour solutions to this mix & mix by light trituration.
5. Add
Tri calcium phosphate.
6. Mix
lightly and then gradually incorporate the precipitated chalk. Mix by light
trituration until uniform mass is produced.
7. Weigh
about 5gm of tooth powder and fill in container with perforated top
USE: To prevent tooth
decay and maintenance of healthy gum.
