ROLE OF NURSE IN PAEDIATRIC NURSING



INTRODUCTION
          The role of the paediatric nurse is constantly changing. These changes are the result of evolving concepts of wellness and illness, scientific and technologic discoveries in the field of health and medical care, the rise of consumption, the impact of the women’s movement and the increasing role of government in the care of children.

DEFINITION
Ø      Paediatric means given a care or treatment to the children at a time of illness
Ø      It is a Greek word which is terum as
o       Peadia  - Child
o       Tric – Care or treatment

HISTORY OF PAEDIATRIC
          During the time of hypocrites the paediatric is know as peadiosomina later it has been converted into paediatric in modern concept of a care.

          The father of medicine devoted a great part of this time to treat the children and made many significant observation on disease found in children.

          The first printed book on pediatric who was Italian (1472) the book name is “BAGULARDER’S”. The title book on this is children, later in 1545 Thomas Phare wrote first English book on children’s disease called “BOOK OF CHILDREN”.
OBJECTIVES:
Ø      Describe the concept of family centered and child – centered care
Ø      Relate Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs to those of the child
Ø      Differentiate among the concepts of care health promotion and prevention of illness health maintenance and health restoration.
Ø      Describe the process of communication and how it facilitates the teaching process with the child and family
Ø      Discuss the expanded and independent role of the paediatric nurse
Ø      Discuss the functional role of the nurse as it relates to primary care, them nursing and accountability
Ø      Relate the value of nursing process and research to family – centered nursing practice

ROLE OF PAEDIATRICNURSE

CARE GIVER
          This role has become a transitional which includes activities that assist the client physically and psychologically. The nurse can play important role in supportive and educative care for the client.

COMMUNICATOR
          It is integrated to all the nursing roles nurses communicate with the clients, relatives and other health personnel and people in the community health nurse.

TEACHER
          As a teacher nurse helps clients to learn about health and its care procedure he/she will educate about disease condition treatment aspect and hospitalization.

CLIENT ADVOCATE
          They acts to protect the client. Here in this role nurse may represent the clients needs and wishes to other health personnel.


COUNSELLOR
          It is a process of helping a client to recognize and cope with stressful psychological, social problems and promote personnel growth. It involves providing emotional, intellectual and psychological support to the client.

CHANGE AGENT
          The nurse act as a change agent when assisting client to make modification in their own behaviour.

LEADER
          Leadership role is emphasizes at different level, individual, family, group and community. It is a learned process requiring an understanding of needs and goals that motivate the peoples.

MANAGER
          Nurse can act as a manager to give a care of individual or family and community by mean of a supervising and evaluating the needs of the client.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS OF THE NURSE IN PEADIATRICS
Ø      Assessment of illness in children
Ø      Collecting of identification data
Ø      Assessing the child in physical examination to identify any abnormality
Ø      Send the investigation with appropriate name, age, sex and I. P no, ward
Ø      Identification of investigation report and informing to the physician
Ø      Provide comprehensive nursing care to the children
Ø      Prevention of illness and injury to the child is important
Ø      Assessment of G & D of the children by mean of maintaining growth chart
Ø      Assess the children in his or her daily activities
Ø      Educate the patient or mother about
o       Sleep and Rest
o       Diet
o       Medication
o       Regular follow up of services
o       Immunization
Ø      Provide psychological support to the mother or patient by mean of explaining about the disease condition. Hospitalization and health status of the child
Ø      Prevention of the communicable disease
Ø      Prevention of cross or nasocomial infection
Ø      The nurse can play important role in a play theraphy which is used as a diversional   theraphy in particularly mentally retarded patient
Ø      Assessment of malnutrition in children
