ANTIANXIETY PROPERTY OF TECOMA STANS LINN LEAVES EXTRACT IN EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS - CONCLUSION

7. CONCLUSION

The results obtained from these experimental models clearly confirmed that the antianxiety activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Tecoma stans linn  The acute toxicity study conducted for aqueous and ethanolic extracts indicates that they are safe up to 2000mg/kg body weight.

The acute treatment with aqueous extract of (800mg/kg) clearly demonstrate a dose dependant antianxiety effect comparable to standard diazepam (2mg/kg; p.o) in all experimental models of anxiety, while ethanolic extract (800mg/kg) had significant antianxiety activity comparable to standard drug diazepam (2 mg/kg; p.o) in all models.

The phytoconstituents like flavonoids were reported for their antianxiety effect and these constituents were present in aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Tecoma stans linn leaves, so this active principle might be responsible for antianxiety effect. The mechanism of antianxiety activity of Tecoma stans linn leaves extracts is unclear hence further studies are needed to identify the anxiolytic mechanism(s) and the phytoconstituents responsible for the observe central effects of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Tecoma stans linn
