TILTING TRAINS SYNOPSIS

TILTING TRAINS

SYNOPSYS

ØOne of the technology that the railway engineers thinking is about the THE TILTING TRAINS, which provide the passengers and the goods to reach the destination with a minimum time.

Ø The technology involved in TILTING TRAIN is that when ever the trains pass over the curves and turnings of the railway tracks the compartments of the train is tilted to a certain angle  by which the trains can travel with no reduction in speed.

Ø By adopting this technology of TILTING TRAINS the fuel consumed by the trains can be saved ,the passengers can feel comfort and also time can be saved.

INTRODUCTION

      Transportation of goods and passengers.

      Reaching the destination quickly

Passing over the turnings of railway tracks causes

Wastage of fuel.

Reduction in speed.

Passenger discomfort ness.

      Solution.

PROBLEMS WITH CORNERS

You feel centrifugal forces when you go in a vehicle which is passing over a corner of a road.

Ø Passengers sitting in the train will also feels centrifugal forces when going around a corners of a railway tracks.

Ø Centrifugal force is a function of (2V/R), where

V= velocity of the train.

R=radius of curve

WHAT ARE TILTING TRAINS ?

Tilting trains are those trains which consists of tilting mechanism in which the coaches are tilted sideways to a certain angle depending on the curve of the track

FORCES ACTING WHILE PASSING OVER CORNERS OF THE RAILWAY TRACK

ØCentrifugal force.

ØGravitational force.

§The above two forces will exert a resultant force on the trains as well as on the passengers.

§Neutralization of the resultant force can be done by tilting the trains.

HOW DO TRAINS TILT ?

Trains tilt with the help of tilting mechanism which involves the following aspects.

Tilting of the compartments by the bogie, which acts as a fulcrum which is hinged at the center.

Controlling of the pistons by the computer.

The computer is assisted by a spirit level.

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED IN TILTING TRACKS

Ø High speed lines in which high speed trains pass must be without tight curves. This limits the tilting of the tracks.

Ø The banking nothing but the tilting of tracks should be designed keeping specific speed in mind.

COUNTRIES WHO DEVOLOPED THE TILTING TECHNOLOGY

Ø BRITAIN.

Ø FRANCE.

Ø SPAIN.

Ø USA/CANADA.

Ø SWEDEN.

Ø SWITZERLAND.

Ø GERMANY.

ADVANTAGES

Ø Fuel consumed by the trains can be minimized.

Ø Speed of the trains can be increased at the curves and hence time to reach the destination is minimized.

Ø There will be comfort ness for the passengers.

DIS-ADVANTAGES

ØCostly to manufacture.

ØIf the coaches do not tilt then there will be disastrous situation.

CONCLUTION

Ø The tilting trains can be considered as the cheerful mini metro trains.

Ø To construct high speed lines it costs about 20 times more per unit distance than to upgrade existing lines for tilting trains.

Ø Tilting trains can go up to 25% to 40% faster around corners than conventional trains without any discomfort ness to the passengers.

THANK YOU
