PRINCIPLE:

Method involved in the production of aluminum hydroxide tablets is wet granulation. In this process powder is converted to granules by using granulating agent. The wet granules obtained are there after subjected to drying and passed through sieve to achieve granules of uniform size.

Aluminum Hydroxide tablet is an example of chewable tablet. Chewable tablets are intended to be chewed in mouth prior to swallowing and are not intended to be swallowed intact. The purpose of the chewable tablet is to provide a rapid disintegration and thereby dissolution of tablet as chewing causes size reduction of particles thus the rapid on set of action is obtained. More over it also provides unit dose of medication, which can De easily administered to infant’s children and elderly people.

Aluminum hydroxide tablet is used as antacid. Tablet is chewed prior to swallowing provides better acid n neutralization and also the dose of antacid is too large to swallow and the activity of antacid is related to its particle size. In aluminum hydroxide tablet mannitol is used as diluents, sodium saccharin as sweetening agent, starch paste as binding agent, Magnesium stearate as lubricant, Calcium carbonate is used to absorb the Peppermint oil, which is used as flavoring agent.

PROCEDURE:

Required quantity of aluminum hydroxide is weighed and taken in mortar along with mannitol and sodium saccharine. To this mixture sufficient t quantity of starch paste is added to get a Coherent mass. This is then passed through sieve number 10 to obtain wet granules. Wet granules thus obtained are subjected to drying in hot air oven not exceeding 60°C. The dried granules are regranulated by passing through sieve # 20 over 44, the fines that are passed through # 44 is collected and amount equivalent to 15% of wt of granules is retained on sieve # 60 is then added to dried granules. The required quantity Magnesium stearate (2%) calcium carbonate (1%) and peppermint oil are added in geometric progressions. These granules are then compressed into tablets.

USE: As an Antacid.

STRENGTH: Each tablet contains 300mg of Aluminum hydroxide

DOSE: 500-1800mg daily 6 times before meals and bedtime.
