PRINCIPLE:

Ointments are semi solid preparations for application to skin or mucous membrane, which have the ability to cling to the surface of application for a required time before it is washed or warm out. This adhesion is due to their plastic rheological behavior, which allows the semisolid to retain their shape and cling as film until acted upon by an outside force. Ointments are used for their emollient effect on the skin for the protection of lesions and for topical medication. The ointments are generally anhydrous and contain one or more medicaments in suspension or in solution form.

Pain balm is prepared by fusion method containing liquid miscible with bases. It is used to relieve pain backache, myalgia, and fibrositis.
