CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY:

Carbonyl Iron is a small particle preparation of highly purified metallic Iron. “Carbonyl “describes the process of manufacture of the particles and not there composition. Carbonyl Iron is a form of elemental iron that offers an effective and safe alternative to ferric salts in the treatment of Iron deficiency anemia. It is used in multi-vitamins, prenatal vitamins, infant!  Children’s vitamins and iron fortified infants formula, among other things.

STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT CARBONYL IRON:

Offers an excellent safety profile, superior to that offered by the ferric salts and
Displays comparable efficacy to ferrous sulfate in treating iron deficiency anemia.
Carbonyl Iron offers five times more elemental iron than in most commonly prescribed iron compounds, ferrous sulfate on a per mg basis.

Iron serves as a carrier for Oxygen and electrons and in addition acts as a catalyst for oxygenation, hydrogenation and other vital metabolic processes.

CARBONYL IRON:

It plays an important role in various biological activities including synthesis of nuclear acids and metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. It also helps in the development of cell-mediated immunity.

FOLIC ACID:

It is needed for normal cell growth therefore its requirement is increased during pregnancy particularly the 3rd trimester. It is necessary for the maturation of erythrocytes.

VITAMIN B12:

It is an essential phosphorus and cobalt containing isolated from purified liver extract and is indicated in pernicious anemia and certain disorders of gastrointestinal absorption.

VITAMIN C:

It acts as an antioxidant by playing a specific role in hydroxylation of proline in collagen, which is related to connective tissue function and wound healing. It is concerned with the formation and maintenance of intracellular supporting structures (dentine, cartilage, collagen and bone marrow). It also acts as a cofactor for the transfoi-matjo’ of folic acid to folinic acid.

INDICATIONS:

Iron Deficiency anemia prophylatically iron supplementation is needed in menorrhagia, pregnancy, lactation, post-gastractomy or in malabsortion states, after surgery and epistaxis.

DOSAGE:

One capsule daily or as directed by the physician

One teaspoon full twice a day or as directed by the physician.
