INTRODUCTION:

Cough is a protective reflex, its purpose being expulsion of respiratory secretions or foreign particles from air passages or stretch receptors in the lungs. Every cough mixture formulary is replete with combinations of antitussives, expectorants, mucolytics & sedative expectorants.

AMBROXOL:

Mucolytics such as Ambroxol are often used to reduce sputum viscosity to facilitate expectoration in chronic asthma and bronchitis. The sulphydryl groups of these compounds open disuiphide bonds in mucus of antitussives, its viscosity to promote easy expectoration.

GUAIPHENESIN:

Expectorants such as Guaiphenesin are claimed to promote expulsion of bronchial secretions. These also tend to make dry cough productive and in addition may have placebo value.

TERBUTALINE SULPHATE:

It is a sedating Antihistamine which acts on histamine HI receptors. Histamine is a chemical that is released in response to allergic or inflammatory stimuli, it causes widening of blood vessels causing reddening and swelling of the tissues and mucus production from the lining of the nose. There is also irritation that causes sneezing and often redness and watering of the eyes .Antihistamines block the action of histamine, preventing dilation of blood vessels, reducing redness and swelling. Antihistamines pass from the blood into the brain, producing general sedation and depression of other brain functions, including the vomiting and coughing mechanisms.

INDICATIONS:

Distressing cough associated with acute & chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, COPD’s & smoker’s cough.

DOSAGE:

Adults & Children over 12 yrs: 10 ml. thrice a day or as directed by the physician.

Children 5 - 12 yrs: 5 ml thrice daily or as directed by the physician.

Children 2 - 5 yrs: 2.5 ml thrice daily or as directed by the physician.
