Introduction:

          Anganwadi is a type of rural child care centre in India.  The word Anganwadi means “Courtyard shelter” in Hindi.  They were started by the Indian government in 1975 as part the Integrated Child Development Services Program to combat child hunger and malnutrition.

 

The basic work:-

Ø  Provide care for newborn babies.

Ø Ensure that all children below the age of 6 are immunized.

Ø Provide antenatal care for pregnant women and ensure that they are immunized against tetanus.

Ø Provide supplementary nutrition to both children below the age of 6 as well as nursing and pregnant women.

Ø Provide post natal care to nursing mothers.

Ø Ensure that regular health and medical check ups of women who fall between the age group of 15 to 49 years.

Ø Providing pre-school education to children who are between 3 to 5 years old.

 

SUMMARY

 

          Anganwadi is a rural child care centre in India.  Anganwadi is the centre for the holistic development of women and children.
